The First Gospel Sermon on the Day of Pentecost - Acts 2
This is
what happened: Right before Jesus went back to heaven,
Jesus had told the apostles to wait in
Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit.
So as they
sat waiting with Mary, the mother of Jesus
and Jesus' brothers and about 120 other
disciples, the Holy Spirit swooped down upon
them in the form of 'tongues of fire'
Now I don't know what that is exactly, but
it is fun to imagine!
The apostles began to draw a
crowd because everyone in the crowd could hear
someone talking about the
Now that was great!
----- that they
could hear about the
but what was really odd was that they could hear someone talking about
Jesus in their very own language (which you wouldn't
expect of Galileans) and there were a lot of
different languages to be spoken on that day!
So the people
were amazed at this!
Some people ridiculed the
apostles and said that they were drunk!
But the apostles weren't drunk; besides,
it was only 9 o'clock in the morning.
So Peter stood up and told the
people that the apostles were not drunk
- they were filled with the Holy Spirit
like had been promised back in the book
of Joel.
God promised to pour out His
Spirit upon everyone that would be his
servant.
And like any good preacher, Peter
pointed out the people's sin. He
told them that they had crucified the
Christ; the Jesus that God resurrected
from the dead and has made Lord
of all things.
It was God's plan that Jesus die for
the sins of the world; but it was by
their wickedness that Jesus was
delivered up to be crucified.
Peter begged them to
repent of their sins and be baptized.
Three-thousand people did so that day.
