People who lived around
Bethany were not much different than you and me.
"What do you want to do this weekend?"
"Hey, let's go down to Bethany
and see that Lazarus guy
that
was dead for 4 days!"
John 11:1-44 & 12:9-10
There was a family living in Bethany who was very close
friends with Jesus. They were Lazarus and his two
sisters Mary, and Martha. One day Lazarus became very
sick so his sisters sent word to Jesus for him to come
quickly.
But Jesus said that this “Sickness will not end in
death” but that it would glorify God. And even though
Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus he waited two days
before traveling to Bethany. After the two days Jesus
told his disciples that Lazarus had fallen asleep and
that it was time to go and wake him. But the disciples
did not understand what he meant and said “Lord, if he
sleeps he will get better.” So Jesus told them plainly,
“Lazarus is dead.”
After arriving in Bethany Jesus found that
Lazarus had already been in his tomb for four days!
Martha came running out to meet Jesus and said “Lord if
you would have been here my brother would not have
died.” Jesus replied “”Your brother will rise again.”
But Martha thought he was talking about Judgment Day
when all the dead will rise. So Jesus said to her “I AM
the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me
will live even though he dies; and whoever live and
believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” But
Martha still did not fully understand and she answered,
“Yes Lord I believe you are the Christ, the Son of God.”
Next Mary came out to meet him and was so
sad about her brother’s death that she was weeping,
Jesus was moved by her sadness so much that he too wept.
After this Jesus went to Lazarus’ tomb and ordered them
to remove the stone away from the entrance. But Martha
argued with him and said “By this time he will have a
bad odor, he has been dead four days.”
But Jesus told her “Did I not tell you that if you
believed you would see the glory of God?” So they took
away the stone and Jesus looked up into heaven and
prayed. After he had prayed he yelled in a loud voice
“LAZARUS, COME OUT!” And sure enough out walked Lazarus
still wrapped in his burial clothes!
Later we read that many
people were putting their faith in Jesus because Lazarus
was telling everyone how Jesus had helped him.
